As the clock struck 9 p.m. Wednesday March 3, Pikesville VFC Squad 322 responded with other Baltimore County units to the report of a house fire in the 3300 Block of Kerry Road in Woodlawn (Fire Box 3-3). Fire dispatch advised responding units they were receiving multiple calls advising fire coming out of the windows of a house. BCoFD Engine 3 (Woodlawn career) arrived first and found a 1.5 story dwelling with heavy smoke and fire showing from the basement windows. The Squad crew arrived moments later right behind BCoFD Truck 18 (Randallstown career) and was sent in to search the first floor. As firefighters were making their attack, command reported an occupant of the home, who had self-evacuated prior to the fire department’s arrival, was located outside with third degree burns to more than 90 percent of his body. The patient was treated by BCoFD Medic 4 (Catonsville career) and was flown via Maryland State Police medevac Trooper 1 to a local burn unit. The squad crew went to the rear of the house and began making a push into the house when units were told to evacuate the structure because of access problems to the basement steps. The entrance to the basement from the back of the house was covered up with wood boards which had to be removed before making entry and because of a weakened interior stairwell. Crews were able to push back in within a few minutes of the evacuation tones and knocked down the fire in the basement and the first floor that traveled through multiple void spaces. The squad remained on location for extensive overhaul and assisted with lighting for Fire Investigation Division.
